Health Canada is advising Canadians that the use of the ingredient methyl methacrylate (MMA) in cosmetic nail preparations is unsafe. The strong adhesion properties of MMA can cause painful tearing and possible permanent loss of the natural nail, should the artificial nail be jammed or caught. Allergic reactions to MMA include red skin rashes, contact dermatitis, itching and/or small oozing blisters in the affected area. MMA may also cause irritation to the nose and throat, as well as headaches. The use of MMA as a cosmetic ingredient poses a risk to the health and safety of consumers. Section 16 of the Food and Drugs Act states that no cosmetic may cause injury to the health of the user. No cosmetic products containing MMA are to be sold in Canada. However, some cosmetic products containing MMA may still be available on the Canadian marketplace. If you suspect that MMA is being used at your local nail salon, contact your nearest Health Canada Product Safety Office. Here are some things to look for if you suspect that MMA is being used: A pungent chemical odour that can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Enhancements that are extremely hard and very difficult to file, even with coarse abrasives. Enhancements that will not soak off in solvents designed to remove acrylics; often the manicurist has to grind the MMA nail down to the real nail. Low cost of full sets of acrylic nails and of touch-up procedures (nail preparations containing MMA are generally one third the price

@1radash – I’m sorry; it was my intention to accuse you of being an inbred skank whore who couldn’t count her toes and get the same number twice!

@doodlesara92083 if you were a professional nail tech then you would know that calluses are not meant to be removed . they are supposed to be soften . i have been a professional nail tech for 7 years now . you are NOT supposed to use the callus remover at ALL . it carry many germs and cuts off necessary skin . the skin is thick because it has pressure on it over a long period of time . if that thick skin’s been remove , nothing can withstand the pressure being put on it

@doodlesara92083 . yes , it is upsetting they show only the bad sides of nail salons , but i do believe i think it is GREAT that they exposed the bad nail salons that are putting US good nail techs into a fight over good services as oppose to cheap services . some people think quantity over quality rather than vice versa .

@Erulastielworrior i am VERY sick from this video . there’s so many of these “poor” salons around where I live . at times i’d have to travel about an hour just to go to work at an upscale salon .

@covergirlx2i5 i know, its horrible, ive just givn up on salons cause ive had more problems with them than there worth, i ended up actually saving up to go to collage and qualify as a manicurist/pedicurist and learning how to do my own acrylic nails. was defonatly worth it thoguht since my mani/pedi collage kit was £100 but ive had it for aaaages and its still gunna last for ages and ive got enough acrylic stuff for atleast 2 years and its cost about £150 for a professional brand. win! ^^

@historysky whats your damage? yes you clean your bathroom daily but its only you using it, its different when loads of people are seen to every day who you dont know. if you had hundreds of people using your bathroom a week, would you clean it more than once a day?

@Erulastielworrior Lol . that’s good ! It’s actually quite fun to do . At our salon , we have brought a new approach and kept it strictly mani/pedi only with service of wine . Very much in popular demand . I’m glad you was able to save especially in this crazy economy ! Congrats and keep saving .
