In general cops are good people and willing to help others even if nothing is returned to them. being a good person and helping others is just being a good human being. she did an exceptional job and excellent decision. CCRB that!!!!!!!

A wonderful story, but the immediate promotion to detective gives me pause – does anyone remember Arlene Beckles, another heroic NYPD officer who thwarted a beauty salon caper and was promoted to detective even though she wasn’t truly qualified for the job? It was all downhill from there for her. Here’s hoping that Detective Jones doesn’t fall into the same trap.

I lived in Yew York a few years, I am proud of the good that comes out of NYC, Mayor Bloomberg is an excellent mayor, and the commissioner is likewise, it’s nice to see these officials recognizing the honorary acts of its citizens, including the NYPD!

@SamBuddwing same here. This situation doesn’t mean she is qualified to become a detective. What I also don’t understand is why the guy was allowed to fire even one shot, let alone five. If she saw the guy with a gun, she should’ve had her gun out immediately, and simultaneous to identifying herself as a police officer. It seems like people could’ve died, but didn’t because the guy missed. Also I highly doubt that she hit the guys gun on purpose.

A 20 year old detective?!?!? I’m going to going to go on a limb here but there is tons of men and women who have served years and are more qualified to become a detective. Recognition hell yes detective hell no. Its all PR..

@cannonballkid you didn’t see 21 jumpstreet? They need young detectives to go undercover in high schools and in child abuse cases.

Does she have a Dead Eye mode?

  12. cannonballkid October 27, 2010 at 9:26 pm #

Well in the case of a TV show I guess that makes sense but it still doesn’t explain her promotion. I still cant believe this lady is 20 she looks like she’s in her mid 30′s pushing 40.

@cannonballkid You are thinking about it backwards! When you work in this city recognition is something that is taken for granted. The NYPD promotes on bravery and going beyond the call of duty. You can take a test to become a detective, but what good is it to take a test when you can earn the spot by taken down a bad guy and saving lives in the process! Maybe she isn’t the right age to be a detective but she will pick up the traits of becoming a great detective at a young age. Its a plus!!!

Just for the record all, Det. Feris Jones is 50, and has been on the NYPD force for 20 years.

I was about to say, she is not “20 yrs. old.” She’s been a NYPD for 20 yrs. and she’s 50 yrs. old.

lol. She’s the female John Marston.

  20. cannonballkid October 28, 2010 at 3:34 am #

@Maverick1375 No you cant take a “test” you have to work for an investigative unit for an allotted time and request promotion. Also how does taking a “bad guy” down display that this PO has the aptitude to work for an investigative unit? So if and when she solves her first case I guess we can make her commissioner…

  21. cannonballkid October 28, 2010 at 3:44 am #

@RAGINGDEMON500 yeah because the video says the 20 year old – the post should have worded it differently
